I love autumn. The chill in the air, colors changing, wearing coats and boots (okay, so I don’t get to do this very often in Los Angeles). Every year when October rolls around, I think, “Nooo, it’s already October? I’m not ready for the holidays” but by mid-October, I’m past denial and skip right into acceptance.
One of my favorite things about the holidays is that it always brings people together – holiday parties, potlucks, visiting family, gift exchanges. Right now, I’m thinking about our upcoming dinner parties and one of the activities I look forward to when hosting a dinner is setting the table. Strange… I know. It must be the event planner in me (and probably my OCD). I love that everything has its place — fork and knife goes here. Tablecloth or placemats? Placecards? How many wine glasses do we need?
When setting the table, the foundation is your dinnerware, and I’m a fan of basic white dinnerware. It’s easy to dress up or down, you can mix them up with other sets and they’re easy to replace. Here are my top picks:
- West Elm -Organic Shaped (dinner plate at $8 – sold as set of 4 for $32)
- Pottery Barn – Au Naturale (dinner plate at $10 – sold as set of 4 for $40)
- Restoration Hardware – Chinese Porcelain Classic Coupe (dinner plate at $12.50 – sold as set of 4 for $50)
- Crate & Barrel – Maison (dinner plate at $12.95)
I’ve only selected round plate sets. While I do love square plates, they take up more real estate on the dining table and when you’re trying to gather lots of people around a holiday dinner, round plates can help squeeze in more family and friends.
Now with the holidays around the corner, what are you looking forward to?
